Our new place's water heater gave out at 2 AM last night

The thing is only 8 years old, but it just flooded the utility closet. Had to call an emergency plumber and he said the whole unit needs replacing, which is like $1,200. Anyone have a good brand that actually lasts?

8 years is nothin' for a water heater. Emergency plumbers always say you need a whole new unit, that's how they make their money. Bet it's just a bad thermostat or a busted relief valve, not the whole tank.
