Saw a really clever way to handle a tricky transition at a hotel lobby in Nashville
They had this old terrazzo floor meeting a new LVT section with about a 3/4 inch height difference. Instead of a big metal reducer, they used a custom wood ramp stained to match the LVT. It was almost invisible. The installer told me he made it from a scrap piece of oak flooring. Anyone have other good ideas for hiding big height gaps without those bulky store-bought strips?

Actually, that custom wood ramp sounds like a big problem waiting to happen. Those store-bought metal strips are made for a reason, to handle foot traffic and cleaning equipment without breaking. A piece of stained scrap wood is just a trip hazard that will crack or warp. Sometimes the bulky, obvious solution is the right one because it's safe and lasts. Getting too clever can just lead to a call back to fix it.

Honestly, that guy is totally right. Tried something similar with a stained pine piece for a tile to carpet drop at my place. Looked nice for maybe two months before it started to splinter from the vacuum wheels. Ngl, ended up putting a big ugly brass strip in anyway, but at least it doesn't move now. Getting too cute with scrap wood just costs you more later.
