Ditched my rule against screen protectors after one costly mistake

I used to think screen protectors were a pointless, ugly scam. The glass on my old phone was fine for years without one. Then my new phone slipped out of a cupholder and got a deep scratch across the display from a single piece of grit. Now I see the argument for them as cheap insurance, even if they slightly change the feel of the screen. My view flipped from seeing them as a waste of money to a practical layer of defense. What's your take, are they essential or mostly just a feel-good purchase for worried folks?
