Hot take: I finally get why old geologists loved hand samples
For years, I thought digital scans were the only way to study rocks properly. Holding a piece of granite from my first field trip made me see the texture you just can't capture on screen. Now I always start with the real thing.

My first sandstone felt like real history in my hands.

That granite from your first field trip must have been really special. I'm honestly shocked you spent years only using digital scans. How can a screen show you the weight and rough edges? It makes me question all the time I've spent looking at rocks online. I guess some things just need to be held to be understood.

Heard a geologist say screens turn rocks into ghosts of themselves. You lose the cold weight in your hand, the way light really hits the cracks. That first granite probably felt like holding a piece of the earth's bones. Makes all our screen time feel like we're just reading the menu instead of eating the meal.
