Local landslide cleanup praised, but I think it's harming the rock record
Everyone on my street is happy about the landslide cleanup on Ridge Road. They say it makes the area safer and looks better. But I disagree. The cleanup is removing important glacial till deposits. These deposits tell us about ice age history in our region. Once they're gone, that data is lost forever. I've tried to explain this at community meetings, but no one listens.

Hearing they're bulldozing GLACIAL TILL on Ridge Road just floored me. Those deposits hold MILLIONS of years of ice age story. Scrubbing them clean for a neat lawn erases how our whole area was built. Like, the rocks and layers show where ancient glaciers traveled and what they dropped. That's permanent data loss for a bit of tidy curb appeal. How is no one seeing this is like throwing away a history book?

@barbara91, that's a scary thought. But what I want to know is, did anyone even try to save samples or map the site first? Those jumbled rocks and different soil layers are like a frozen snapshot of where the glacier last stood. Once it's gone, we lose clues about past climate shifts too. Who makes the call to wipe out something that old for just grass?
