Debate on my street: Should our local indie spot book only unknown bands?
Some say it keeps the scene fresh, others think it hurts attendance... what's your take?

You know how everything feels kinda samey now? Like how every coffee shop has the same playlist and your phone only shows you stuff you already like. If that spot only books unknowns, it breaks that loop. But you gotta mix in some known acts too, or nobody shows up and the whole thing dies. Honestly my favorite local place does like 80% new bands, 20% bigger draws, and that balance keeps the lights on while still feeling fresh.

The DIY space on Maple Street went all-unknown last season and barely broke even. Like stella_scott said, you need some known draws to get people in the door. Finding that balance is key, and it's cool when a venue gets it right.

Spot this same thing with streaming playlists and netflix. Everything pushes the safe, known stuff at you because it works, but then nothing new ever breaks through. A venue doing that mix is basically fighting the algorithm in real life. They use the draws to pay the bills, but those unknown slots are how you find the next big thing before the algorithm does. It's risky but that's how culture moves forward instead of just going in circles. When a place gets the balance right it feels like a real community spot, not just another content feed.
