Had a talk with my neighbor Sal about how he keeps his fence gates from sagging for 20 years
He told me he drills a 3/8 inch hole through the latch plate and drops a galvanized nail in there as a pin, and I spent last Sunday retrofitting all three of my gates wondering why I never thought of something that simple.

The "dropping a nail in there as a pin" part got me thinking. It's funny how the best fixes are just something you already have in a coffee can in the garage. I see that same kind of thing with split pins on trailer hitches. Everybody buys those little cotter pins for a dollar, but a bent-up finishing nail works just as good for years until it rusts through. It's like the whole world forgot old farmers solved this stuff with scrap metal.

Ain't that the truth. Real ones know the coffee can is worth more than the whole toolbox.
