So tired of people resoldering broken headphone jacks wrong
I swear every thrift store find I grab with a loose jack has been hacked up by someone with a $15 iron. Last week I got a pair of Sennheiser HD 280s from a guy on Craigslist for $20 and the left channel was dead cause he bridged the ground to the ring. I spent an hour with my multimeter tracing his mess and had to redo all 3 joints. Come on folks, learn the TRRS pinout before you touch vintage gear. It's not that hard to look up a diagram on your phone while you work. Anyone else run into this with old headphones or am I the only one who checks continuity first?

Nah, fixing it yourself is exactly why vintage gear costs $20 now lol.

Those HD 280s are tanks but they're also magnets for bad soldering jobs. I've fixed the headband wire on mine twice now because people twist the cable instead of unplugging it at the jack. One thing that helps a ton is using a helping hands tool with a magnifying glass so you can actually see the solder pads without burning your fingers on the plastic housing. Also get yourself some flux paste, it makes a world of difference on these older joints where the factory solder is all crusty. Most of the time it's just a cold joint from someone not heating both the wire and the pad long enough.
