Our cabin getaway went smoothly after working on my dog's leash manners
We rented a small cabin in the woods for a few days, and I was concerned about my dog, Rex, pulling on trails. I spent the weeks before practicing 'heel' and loose-leash walking in busy local parks. He walked nicely beside me the entire trip, even when we saw squirrels. It was a relief and made the hike much more peaceful.

That point about practicing in busy parks beforehand is so key. It's like you built up his focus around bigger distractions so the woods felt easier by comparison. I've found that kind of gradual challenge increase is what actually sticks long-term, not just quick fixes. Getting a solid heel around squirrels is the real test for any dog owner.

Feel you, @joseph491, squirrels are the real test.

Two weeks of consistent heel practice in my local shopping center parking lot was the game changer for my lab. I mean @joseph491 is totally right about that gradual build up, it just makes sense to the dog. Going from quiet streets to a place with shopping carts and kids meant our actual walks later felt easy. Getting that focus in a busy spot before you hit the woods is the only way it sticks. It’s not a quick fix, you have to put in those boring training sessions first.
