Spent $60 on a proper bird feeder and it saved me from buying cheap ones

I kept buying those $10 plastic tube feeders from the hardware store in Des Moines and they'd crack after one winter. Finally broke down and got a steel mesh feeder with a metal roof from Wild Birds Unlimited for about $60. It's been two years now and it still looks new, plus the squirrels can't chew through it. Anyone else find that paying more upfront for outdoor gear actually costs less in the long run?

Oh man, I had the exact opposite lesson with a $40 "heavy duty" bird feeder that the raccoons treated like an all-you-can-eat buffet. They figured out how to unscrew the cap on the first night, I swear they're smarter than my neighbor's labradoodle. Now I'm back to cheap plastic ones cause at least when a raccoon destroys a $10 feeder I can laugh it off instead of crying into my morning coffee. Plus the cheap ones come in fun colors, my current one is this hideous bright orange that makes my HOA president twitch every time he walks by.

Did the raccoons leave any tips on how to open a pickle jar?
