Why does nobody mention how weird it is when strangers comment on your food?

I was eating a sandwich at a diner in Cleveland last Tuesday and a guy two tables over goes "that looks good, what did you order?" Like, why do people think that's okay? I just said "turkey club" and stared at my plate till he left. Has anyone else had random food commentary from a stranger feel way too personal?

Used to think people were just being friendly but yeah that Cleveland diner thing would've weirded me out too. Now I get why some folks just want to eat in peace without the commentary.

Man that diner thing got so much attention. I had a similar thing happen at a Denny's in Omaha once where the waitress sat down and started telling me about her divorce. I just wanted my Grand Slam in peace.
