Moved my backpack to the overhead rack on a crowded bus in Seattle

I always kept my bag on my lap, but last Tuesday I put it up top and suddenly had twice the legroom without blocking the aisle. Has anyone else tried switching where you stow your stuff to give other riders more space?

Kind of rude to take up overhead space with a backpack when people have suitcases up there.
