I finally got to the bottom of that weird Maytag washer hum

Had a customer in Springfield with a 5 year old Maytag front loader making a low hum only on the spin cycle. Spent three hours last Tuesday checking the usual suspects, motor, belt, bearings, nothing. Then I remembered a forum post about the spider arm support cracking on certain models. Sure enough, with the drum out, there was a hairline crack you could only see with a bright light. Replaced the whole spider assembly, part number W10835648, and the hum was gone. Has anyone else seen this specific failure on the MVWX655DW model?

That spider crack is a known weak point on those models.

Are you sure that crack was the real problem? A low hum on spin could be a dozen things. That part is a huge job to replace, maybe the real fix was just taking the whole drum out and putting it back in. Could have been a bit of debris that got knocked loose during the teardown, or the belt tension changed. I've seen similar noises come and go after a good clean out.
