My mentor's honesty lesson clashes with today's sales targets

I still hear his voice in my head every time a manager pushes for extra charges.

Yeah, I've been there. My old boss used to say 'build trust, not bills,' but then quota day hits. I found that being upfront about optional add-ons actually builds repeat business. Like, instead of pushing a warranty, explain what it covers and let them choose. It feels slower, but your clients come back because they know you're not just after their wallet.

My barber does that with hot towel shaves.

But does that old school advice actually pay the bills now? Seems like a nice idea that gets run over by real numbers.

Honestly, my sales numbers look like a rollercoaster some months because I just can't bring myself to lie about a needed part. Tbh, I've watched guys who upsell every little thing make a quick buck, but then their phone stops ringing. Ngl, it feels good when a customer calls back and asks for you by name because you didn't try to scare them into a full repipe for a simple fix. The short term pressure is real, but so is the long term peace of mind from not hating yourself in the mirror.
