My old boss said never trust a fridge thermometer, and I found out why on a Tuesday call
He said the cheap dial ones read 10 degrees off after a year, so I tested three of them against my $90 probe and every single one was low. Cost a customer a compressor last spring because I believed the dial. Anyone else keep a probe in the van just for this?
Did you ever check them in ice water first before tossing them? I read a thing from a health inspector a while back where they tested a whole box of those dial thermometers and something like 7 out of 10 were off by more than 5 degrees, and a couple were off by 15. The part that stuck with me was that they drift over time because the little coil inside gets bent or worn out, so even a good one can go bad after a year or two. That lines up with what your old boss told you. I started keeping a probe in my truck too and now I check it against boiling water and ice water every few months just to be sure. Cheap insurance compared to killing a compressor.
