Pro tip: a grumpy customer told me to stop guessing and asked for amp readings, now my callback rate is way lower
Had a guy in his 70s stand over my shoulder last month while I was looking at his dead dryer, and he asked me plain as day, "Did you put a meter on it or are you just feeling lucky?" I had been doing the old smell test and eyeballing the belt, which honestly works sometimes but not that day. He said his last tech swapped three parts and billed him $280 before it finally ran, and he was done paying for guesses. So now I clamp my meter on the outlet, the heating element, and the motor windings before I touch a single screw. My callback rate dropped from around 1 in 5 jobs to maybe 1 in 12 over the last six weeks, just from writing down actual numbers first. Anybody else get humbled by an old timer who just wanted to see real readings?
Watched my uncle do almost the same thing to a plumber years back, guy was about to swap the whole water heater and my uncle made him check the incoming pressure first. Turned out the regulator was shot and the heater was fine the whole time. Cost him 40 bucks instead of 900 and that plumber looked like he wanted to crawl under the house. Old guys who paid for bad work enough times just stop trusting vibes.
