Split on using manufacturer wiring diagrams vs just tracing the circuit yourself after a bad call in St. Louis

I'm with you 100% on that, "bad call in St. Louis" part really hits home. I had a similar nightmare last year where the factory diagram was completely outdated and had me chasing a phantom ground for two hours before I just started poking around the harness myself. Nothing beats actually seeing the wires and using your meter to figure out what's what, especially in older buildings where the prints are just a suggestion at best.

Hold on, I gotta push back a little here. Isn't relying on your meter and just poking around the harness kind of a gamble in itself? You might fix the symptom but miss the real cause, like a failing relay or a bad splice that'll pop up again in a month. Factory diagrams might be outdated, but at least they give you a starting point to cross-reference, even if they're wrong. I've seen guys follow their gut and end up creating more problems than they solved, especially in those older buildings where the rats have rearranged everything.
