Vent: I used to take apart compressors to check for acid burnout. Now I just swap and move on.
Back in 2019 I would spend an hour cutting open a sealed compressor, testing the oil with a test kit, and looking for that burnt popcorn smell. My old mentor taught me that way, said it was the only proper method. But after 3 straight calls where the customer's unit died again within 6 months, I realized the extra diagnosis didn't change anything. Now I just swap the compressor, add a new filter drier, and hit it with a vacuum. My failure rate actually dropped because I'm not wasting time on a dying part. Has anyone else dropped the old-school diagnostic steps and seen better results?

My buddy used to do the whole breakdown thing and his van caught on fire.

Wait was he using a cheap propane setup or one of those DIY hose things? What exactly caught fire first?
