Found out B2B emails with 'exclusive offer' in the subject line get 22% fewer opens - here's how I stumbled onto it

I was digging through some HubSpot data from a campaign we ran back in March for a client in Phoenix, and I noticed something wild. We had two versions of the same email, one with 'exclusive offer' in the subject line and one without. The one without got 22% more opens and 34% more clicks. I thought that phrase was solid gold but it actually tanked everything. Has anyone else seen weird stats like this from your own campaigns where a 'proven' phrase backfired, or is it just me?

Oh man, that's wild but it actually makes total sense. My buddy runs a small software company and he told me they tested "limited time offer" versus "our latest update" for their monthly newsletter. The "limited time" one bombed hard, like 18% lower open rate. He was convinced it was the magic phrase but his customers just saw it as spammy junk. They actually got way more engagement when they just said something straight like "new features available now" instead. Sometimes the classic marketing words don't work anymore because everyone's brain is trained to ignore them. It's crazy how one little word can totally change how people react to your email.
