Rant: I called intent data a buzzword scam, then a $12k pipeline month shut me up
Six months ago at my old SaaS job in Columbus, our VP bought an intent data tool and I told my coworker it was just expensive window shopping. I had every reason to be sour. We blew $2,400 a month on a platform in 2022 that flagged companies who had already signed with us, and I got stuck making apology calls to sales about it. So when this new tool came in, I basically ignored it for three weeks and kept working my usual inbound list. Then our SDR pulled a report on a Tuesday and showed me 14 accounts that had been reading our pricing page for nine days straight, and one was a logistics company in Toledo we had never talked to. We sent one email, got a reply in 40 minutes, and closed a $12k deal in 11 days. That one deal paid for the tool for a year, and we ended up booking four more meetings off the same report. I still think half the intent vendors out there are selling you noise, but I was wrong to lump them all together. So for the folks running smaller teams, how are you telling a real buying signal from a bot just refreshing the page?
