Tried automated email sequences for 3 months and got ghosted by 80% of my leads

I set up a 5-email drip campaign for a batch of 200 B2B leads I bought from a list broker back in January. The open rates looked fine at first, like 40% on email two, but by email four almost nobody was clicking through. I called a few of the ones who did open and they said the emails felt too generic, like I was copying and pasting from some template. Has anyone else had better luck with super short 2-email sequences or should I just go back to cold calling everyone?

My buddy runs a small roofing company and tried the same thing last summer. He bought a list of homeowners and set up this 3 email sequence about roof inspections. After two weeks he had zero replies and one guy actually replied asking to be taken off the list. He switched to just one personalized email per lead that mentioned their specific street or a recent storm in their area. Now he books about 5 calls a week from that same list. His open rates are lower but the people who open actually respond.

Did you try splitting up that list at all? @finley_wells66's buddy has the right idea - one good personalized email beats five generic ones every time. With those 200 leads, I'd group them by industry or role first, then write each short sequence just for that group. Keep it to two emails max. The first email should mention something specific to their company, the second one can be a quick follow up with a case study that fits their situation. Works way better than blasting everyone with the same stuff.
