Vent: I chose the cheap caulk gun over the nice one, now I have a new baseboard project

So last Saturday I'm staring at two caulk guns at the hardware store in Tulsa. One is $8, the other is $28 with this fancy drip release trigger. I told myself I'd only use it once for the bathroom, so I grabbed the cheap one. Big mistake. That thing would not stop dripping no matter what I did. I spent an hour wiping globs off the tub and my hands, then when I released the pressure it shot a bead straight across the baseboard. Now I got this thick crusty line I gotta scrape off and redo. Should've just paid the extra twenty bucks, or better yet used my finger and a wet rag like my dad always did. Has anyone else had a caulk gun decide to betray them mid-project, or is it just me and my bad luck? I'm honestly thinking about switching to those squeeze tubes next time, they seem easier to control.

Painted my deck with stain instead of paint, now I'm on side one of the argument

Last month in Portland, I grabbed a can labeled 'deck and siding stain' and slapped it on my old pine deck, figuring it'd protect like paint but look more natural. Three weeks later, the water beads up fine but the color is blotchy as heck, and my neighbor swears stain is better because it soaks in and won't peel like paint will. So which is the real DIY move for a first-timer, paint that hides mistakes or stain that's true to the wood, and has anyone else had this same split opinion?

Decided to level my own shed, now the door opens into a tree

Last month I got tired of the shed door scraping the ground, so I dug out one corner and shoved a paver under it. Turns out I leveled the front edge but jacked the whole frame sideways, now the door swings open and slams into a low branch I never noticed before. My neighbor watched the whole thing from his porch and just said 'looks like that tree won.' I spent two weekends and about $40 on gravel and pavers to make my storage situation objectively worse. Has anyone else done a 'quick fix' that somehow made the original problem look like a luxury?

My floating shelf became a weapon after 3 days

I built a driftwood shelf last Tuesday for my salt lamp, used those little plastic anchors that came with the bracket kit. By Friday the whole thing came crashing down at 2am, lamp shattered into about 40 pieces. Turns out the anchor was too small for the wall gap, I should've measured that drywall depth first. Has anyone else had an invisible failure that only shows up at the worst time?

Why is everyone painting over peeling trim without scraping first

Watched my neighbor slap two coats straight onto flaking baseboards last Saturday and then act shocked when it bubbled... I've saved myself 3 repaint jobs in my 1970s ranch by just spending 20 minutes with a putty knife first. Has anyone else seen this shortcut backfire or am I the only one who thinks prep is non-negotiable?

Appreciation post: the drywall knife that attacked me back in my kitchen

Last Tuesday I tried to smooth out a patch near the outlet in my kitchen with a 6 inch drywall knife. I figured it was a quick 15 minute job, but the old compound had dried weird and the knife slipped right into my thumb. Blood everywhere, had to wrap it in a paper towel and drive to the urgent care on Route 9. The doc asked if I was a professional and I laughed so hard it hurt worse. Took me 3 tries to get the patch flat after that, and I finally realized I was pushing too hard the whole time. Now I use light pressure and a wider 10 inch knife for big areas. Has anyone else had a tool bite them and then had to redo the same spot over and over?

My grandpa's workbench top still haunts me after all these years

Went back to my parents' place last month and saw the old workbench my grandpa built in the 70s. That thing has survived 4 moves, a flood, and my teenage attempts at fixing a lawnmower with a hammer. I tried to build a simple shelf last week and ended up with 3 crooked brackets and a bruised thumb. It got me thinking, how do people actually learn this stuff now when even the basic stuff goes sideways? Anybody else look at an older relative's setup and feel like you missed some secret class on building things?

Friend swore by duct tape for a pipe leak, I used epoxy instead. Who was right?

My buddy Mike kept saying a wrap of duct tape would hold a pinhole leak under my kitchen sink until the plumber came. I ignored him and grabbed the $8 epoxy putty from the hardware store in Tulsa, pressed it on, and it dripped again within an hour. Mike laughed and taped over the putty, and that held for 3 days straight. So is duct tape actually underrated for emergency fixes, or did I just buy bad epoxy? Has anyone else had a buddy's junk advice oddly work out better than the real solution?

My floating shelf fell off the wall after 4 months, the old nail holes tell the story

Honestly, I used those cheap plastic anchors from the hardware store in my apartment in Austin and thought they were fine. The shelf held my books up fine for a while, then one Tuesday it just dropped everything onto my floor. When I looked at the holes, I realized the anchors were way too small for the screws, and the drywall was basically dust. Has anyone else had this happen with those little red ones, or is it just me?

The $9 moisture meter that saved my kitchen reno

Found out my "dry" subfloor was sitting at 18% moisture when I tested it with a cheap pin meter from Amazon, way past the 12% max for tile work. Checked every room after that and found two more spots that would've bubbled the vinyl within months. Anyone else trust their nose and eyes too much on moisture calls?

I finally got scammed by a $300 paint sprayer from a 'deal' site

Saw a Graco clone for $300 on some random ad, thought I was smart skipping the $700 pro model. Got it last Tuesday, spent all weekend prepping my kitchen cabinets, then it clogged every 10 minutes. Took it apart 4 times, cleaned it with thinner, still sprayed like a drunk kid with a water gun. Ended up renting a real sprayer from Home Depot for $85 and redoing everything in 3 hours. Has anyone else been burned by knockoff tools that look way better in the pics than they work?

The day I tried to fix a squeaky stair and ended up in the ER

Last Tuesday I decided to tackle that annoying squeak on the third step from the top. I pulled up the carpet, grabbed my drill, and somehow managed to hit the water line running under the floorboard. My living room ceiling now has a lovely texture only I can see

Tried to skim coat a patch in my 1950s bungalow in Portland and the mud dried before I could blend it. Now there's a lumpy square that catches light from every angle, even at night with the lamps off. Spent 3 hours sanding and it got worse, so I bought a bag of popcorn texture at Home Depot for $14. Has anyone ever successfully matched old knock-down texture without it looking like a bad burrito?

The shelf bracket that dropped my whole spice collection at 2am

Last Saturday I put up a floating shelf with drywall anchors rated for 50 pounds, but I only used two for a 30 inch board. Around 2am the whole thing came down, glass jars everywhere, and my kitchen smelled like cumin for three days. Anybody else trust anchors way more than they should?

Found out my paint color was 40% more expensive because of the undertone

Tbh I was picking out a gray for my bathroom in Austin last Saturday and the guy at the store told me the undertone pigments add like $18 a gallon. I thought all paint was basically the same chemistry until I saw the receipt for 2 gallons and almost choked. Has anyone else gotten blindsided by a weird pricing detail like that mid-project?

Finally fixed the shelf I broke 3 months ago, only took 4 tries

That cheap particle board shelf in my laundry room collapsed back in February. I tried wood glue first. Then brackets. Then a whole new board that I cut wrong by 2 inches. Yesterday I used a $9 metal corner brace from Ace and it's solid now. Feels dumb to be this happy about a shelf but here we are. Anyone else spend way too long on something simple before getting it right?

The laundry room shelf that tried to kill my cat

Tried to hang a simple shelf above the washer last Tuesday and used drywall anchors rated for 50 pounds. Came back an hour later to find the whole thing ripped out and my cat Loki sitting on the fallen board like it was a throne. Turns out I ignored the stud finder because it kept beeping at the pipe behind the wall. Anyone else trust the anchors over the stud finder and regret it, or is my cat just lucky I was home?

Rental house shorted me on paint, used the trim color for the walls

Landlord skimped on the cheap stuff and gave me one gallon of the wall color for a 12x14 bedroom. I figured I'd just blend it with the trim paint we had left over, thought no big deal. Two coats later it looked like a pale pink bandage on a beige wound, lol. My wife walked in and said 'did you even look at the swatch?' Now I'm stripping it all off with a $30 heat gun that smells like burning regret. Has anyone else tried mixing leftover paints just to save a trip to the store?

I finally measured my stair treads before buying that $45 retrofit kit

Turns out my 1970s stairs in Columbus have treads a full inch deeper than standard, so the kit barely covered half of each step. Has anyone else dealt with non-standard stair sizes, or should I just cut my own from plywood next time?

Tried to fix a squeaky stair with a candle, now the whole landing smells like a bakery

So last Tuesday I got tired of that creak on the third step from the top. Watched a video about rubbing a candle on the nail heads, sounded easy enough. Lit the candle, dripped a bit of wax on the step, then tried to rub it in with my thumb. Burned myself, dropped the candle, and it rolled under the railing. By the time I fished it out, the wax had pooled on the carpet and I'd managed to set a small patch of the trim on fire. Smothered it with a towel, no real damage, but now the whole landing smells like vanilla and burnt socks. The stair still squeaks. Anyone else try the wax trick and end up with a mess? Should I just accept the squeak and buy a rug?

My neighbor swore by a $5 pipe wrench for PVC, now I'm patching a wall

Guy three doors down told me a pipe wrench grips PVC fine if you wrap it in tape. First twist split the fitting and sent water spraying across the kitchen, soaked my drywall patch. Anyone else get bad advice from a neighbor and just nod while it failed?

Rant: My $40 paint sprayer turned our hallway into a Jackson Pollock mess

Last Saturday I finally tried that paint sprayer I bought for a bedroom project, but the nozzle clogged three times in 45 minutes. Each time it unclogged, it blasted a thick blob of paint across the wall, and I ended up with these ugly drips everywhere. My wife walked in and said, "It looks like a toddler sneezed on the drywall." I spent 5 hours sanding and repainting by hand, which pretty much erased any time I saved. I didn't even get to the hallway trim, so now I'm stuck with half-painted baseboards too. Anyone else swear off sprayers after one rough go, or is there a brand that actually works without this headache?

Hit 17 stripped screws on one shelf build, that finally changed my mind about pilot holes

I was putting together a heavy pine shelf in my garage last Saturday and thought I could skip drilling pilot holes to save time. Seventeen screws stripped out of the cheap wood before I gave up and went to the hardware store for a proper countersink bit. Has anyone else had that moment where one bad project finally makes you stop cutting corners?
