Bought a $12 stud finder after years of knocking on drywall like a caveman
I mounted a floating shelf in my daughter's room and two of the four screws missed the studs completely because the knocking trick lied to me. The cheap Zircon beeps and lights up, and it found every stud dead center. Did I just get lucky with this one, or was I the only person still guessing?

Those cheap Zircons work fine, just scan twice from both sides before drilling.
