Hit 17 stripped screws on one shelf build, that finally changed my mind about pilot holes
I was putting together a heavy pine shelf in my garage last Saturday and thought I could skip drilling pilot holes to save time. Seventeen screws stripped out of the cheap wood before I gave up and went to the hardware store for a proper countersink bit. Has anyone else had that moment where one bad project finally makes you stop cutting corners?

17 stripped screws? I would've lost my mind after like screw number four. That's not even a project anymore at that point, that's just you fighting a losing war against a piece of pine. Cheap wood is the worst too because it strips if you look at it wrong, forget about actually driving a screw in there with any force. Honestly you probably spent more time fighting those screws than it would've taken to drill every single pilot hole twice.
