Neighbor's "quick fix" for my sagging fence made it worse
My neighbor Bob told me to just nail a 2x4 diagonally across the gap, said he'd done it a dozen times. Took me 20 minutes and a $9 board, now the whole section bows inward every time it rains. Has anyone else had a well-meaning neighbor's advice cause more problems than it solved?

Did you check the ground around the post before you put that brace on? Sagging usually means the post is rotted or the concrete base shifted, not that the board needs support. That diagonal 2x4 just transfers the movement to the top rail and makes it twist. Bob's fix works if the post is solid and the gap is small, but if water is pooling near the base, you're fighting the real problem. How much play does the post have if you push on it hard?
