Took me 6 hours to hang one shelf because I trusted the stud finder

I spent 6 hours hanging a single floating shelf in my garage last Saturday because the stud finder kept beeping at random spots on the drywall. Turns out the thing was picking up the old metal lath behind the drywall, so I drilled 11 holes before I gave up and just knocked on the wall like a normal person. My wife asked why the garage looked like it lost a fight with a woodpecker. Anyone got a stud finder that actually works or am I just supposed to guess forever?
