The $1,200 deposit mistake I made moving to Portland, and how a U-Haul guy saved me
When I moved from Boise to Portland two years ago, I put down a $1,200 deposit on an apartment I had only seen in photos. The U-Haul guy at the counter on SE Powell asked where I was headed and when I named the complex, he just shook his head and told me to drive by after dark first. I did, and the whole block was a mess of broken glass and noise, so I got my deposit back and rented a room from a guy on Craigslist for 3 weeks while I looked around. Has anyone else almost signed a lease sight unseen when moving to a new city?
