A client's one sentence about my welds changed my setup

I had a guy in Tulsa last spring look at a gate I built and say, 'your beads are clean but your starts and stops look like an afterthought.' I was grinding every finish point smooth, but he showed me how to tuck the weld start into the joint before striking the arc. Now I position my body and torch angle so the first spark lands exactly where I want it, not just close. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you rethink your basic habits, not just your technique?

That $400 forge thermometer was a total waste of cash

Bought a fancy digital thermometer setup for my coal forge thinking I needed precision control. Thing lasted about 4 heats before the probe wire melted near the fire pot. Should have known better since I've been eyeballing colors for 15 years. My old Harbor Freight magnet stick does the same job for 8 bucks. Anyone else get burned by fancy gear that just fails on real shop work?

Bought a $240 power hammer attachment, used it twice, back to hand tools

Last spring I grabbed one of those bolt-on power hammer kits for my treadle frame. Figured it would speed up my drawouts and save my shoulder. Total cost with shipping came to $240, and I spent three weekends just getting the linkage tuned so it wouldnt bounce like a jackrabbit. Used it on maybe two real projects, a set of leaf hooks and one gate scroll. The thing hits way too fast for anything delicate, and for heavy work my 4 lb hammer gets better control. Now its sitting in the corner collecting dust and rust. I keep thinking about selling it but shipping that much cast iron is a pain. Anyone else blow money on a tool that looked great in the video but never clicked with how you actually work?

My cheap anvil stand collapsed mid-project, nearly took out my foot

Last Tuesday I was forging a set of leaf hooks, about 3 hours into a long session, when my homemade stand finally gave out. I built it from stacked 2x6s and lag bolts back in April, but the wood had dry rotted near the base without me noticing. The anvil tipped forward, bounced off my boot, and landed on the concrete with a crack that echoed through the whole shop. I spent the rest of the afternoon rebuilding it with angle iron and carriage bolts, but now I'm second guessing if I should just buy a proper fabricated stand. The day my forge blower died and I found out why after 3 hours

I was mid-way through a batch of 12 coat hooks last Saturday when the blower on my forge just stopped, no warning, no weird noise. Overheard a guy at the scrap yard say heat treat is 90% eyeballing, got me thinking

I was dropping off some old farrier tools in Tulsa yesterday and heard this older smith tell his apprentice that he'd never used a thermometer, just watched the color and judged by the shadows on the steel. He said his first 50 knives were garbage but he learned more from one cracked blade than any class he took. Does anyone else trust their eye over a digital readout, or am I just being stubborn about trying a proper kiln?

Update: I stopped using a power hammer for small hooks

For years I swore by my power hammer for every little scroll and hook, figured it was faster and that was that... then last Tuesday I watched an old timer at a demo in Portland crank out fifteen identical hooks with just a hand hammer and a jig. He did it in about the same time, but the grain flow and finish were cleaner, no scale pits at all. Now I only break out the power hammer for stock over 1/2 inch, anyone else gone back to hand forging for smaller work and seen a real difference?

Last Tuesday a retired farmer wandered into my shop in Moline and just stood by the anvil, arms crossed, not saying anything. After I finished a set of gate hinges he finally points and says 'your heat is even now, that took me ten years to figure out.' He bought one hinge and told me to keep the other as a reminder, then left. Has anyone else had a total stranger give better feedback than a paying customer?

Spent 6 hours fighting a stuck drift pin, turns out it was my hammer angle

Last Tuesday I was trying to pull a rusted drift pin out of a trailer hitch I was fixing up, and after 6 hours of soaking it in penetrating oil and beating on it with a sledge, I finally realized I was hitting it at a 10 degree upward angle the whole time. Once I squared up my swing and gave it one good solid whack from straight on, it popped right out like it was never stuck. Has anyone else had a job where the fix was just adjusting your own stance or swing instead of changing tools?

Spent 2 months striking wrong because I watched a YouTube video at 2x speed

So I got into this thinking my hammer grip was fine. Then a buddy came by my little setup in Columbus and watched me hit a billet for like 5 minutes. He just looks at me and goes "why are you choking up on the hammer like a golf club?" I had no idea what he meant. Turns out I was holding it halfway up the handle the whole time, which messes up the arc and makes every hit weaker. I only figured it out because he said my strikes looked like I was tapping a nail instead of forging. Has anyone else had a "wait, that's not how you do it" moment that took way too long to click?

My anvil stand cracked right during a demo in Nashville

Was doing a live demo at a fairgrounds event outside Nashville and mid swing the wooden stand under my 150 lb anvil split right down the side. The anvil tipped forward and nearly landed on my foot, scared the heck out of me. Had to grab some scrap 4x4s and bolt together a quick A-frame stand on the spot with my buddy holding it steady while I worked. The old stand was oak but had a hidden rot line, should have checked it before going public. Anyone else had a stand fail or do you guy weld up steel frames instead?

Spent 6 months chasing a quench oil issue that was actually my thermocouple

I kept getting soft edges on knives even though my oil was new and the temps looked right. My mentor kept saying the oil was bad, so I swapped to three different brands and still had problems. Finally broke down and checked my probe against a calibrated one, it was reading 75 degrees low the whole time. Read a forum post about quenching oil temps, now I'm doubting my whole setup

Someone claimed canola oil needs to be at 130 degrees or you're just wasting steel, and here I've been quenching cold for 12 years after 200 blades with no cracks, so has anyone actually tested this with a thermometer or is that just book talk?

I was making corner brackets for a gate job in Tulsa and pushed out exactly 200 punches before my grip gave up, which surprised me since I thought I'd be good for 300. Does anyone track their punch counts per hour, or am I just overthinking a tired arm?

Switched from coal to charcoal on a whim, never going back

Tried a bag of hardwood charcoal last Thursday after my coal supplier flaked. Heat control is way more forgiving, and I burned through a billet of 1080 without overheating it once. Anyone else made the swap or sticking with coal for a reason?

The day I found out my anvil face was crowned and I never knew

Been hitting steel on the same anvil for 6 years, a 150 pounder I got from a farm sale outside Reno. Last weekend a guy came by my shop to look at a vise I had for trade, and he ran a straight edge across the face. He just looked at me and said, you know this is crowned about 8 thousandths in the middle, right? I thought he was messing with me, so I checked it myself with a feeler gauge. Sure enough, there's a slight hump across the face that I've been hammering against the whole time. That means every flat piece I've drawn out has a subtle curve in it, and I never noticed because the curve is so small. But it explains why some of my scrollwork and leaf shapes always looked a bit off when I set them on a flat table. Has anyone else dealt with a crowned anvil face and did you mill it flat or just learn to work around it?

Lost my temper at a blade demo in Austin, learned more than the crowd did

Last month I was doing a demo at a local guild meetup in Austin. This guy in the front row kept asking why I was using a hand crank blower instead of an electric one, real smug about it. I snapped back something short and kept working. After the demo he came up and apologized, said his granddad used to swear by hand crank too and he just wanted to see if I had a reason. We ended up talking forge temperatures for 20 minutes. That moment showed me I was letting my ego get in the way of a real question. Now when anyone questions my setup, I walk them through my thought process instead of shutting them down. Has anyone else had a heckler turn into an actual useful conversation? What was the question that got under your skin first but taught you something?

Spent $250 on a used power hammer, now I'm rebuilding the whole thing

Found a 25lb little giant at a farm auction outside Des Moines last month. The guy said it just needed new dies and a clean up, so I figured it was a steal. Got it home and the ram was wobbling like a drunk uncle, plus the clutch was shot. I've got maybe $180 in parts so far and three weekends of work into it. At this rate I could have bought a new one on sale, but the learning has been pretty interesting. Anyone else bought a bargain priced hammer that ended up being a parts pile? Might be nice to know I'm not alone in this rabbit hole.

My hammer angle was off by 15 degrees for 3 years

Tbh I always set my hammer head square to the handle, figured that was the standard. Then last month I watched a guy work at a demo in Columbus and his hammer landed way flatter with less effort. Turns out I should have been angling the head forward slightly, about 10 to 15 degrees, for better striking control. The tip off was how many times I had to re-hit the same spot to move metal. Now I grind my own heads with that tilt built in and it cuts my forging time by a third. Has anyone else messed around with handle offsets or am I late to this party?
