Dropped $150 on a cheap anvil from a farm auction - huge mistake

I saw a beat-up 100lb anvil at a farm auction in Ohio for $150 and figured I could grind off the rust and use it. Got it home and realized the face was chipped in like 10 spots and the rebound was almost zero. I spent 4 hours trying to dress it with a flap disc but the steel underneath was way too soft. Now I'm saving up for a proper one from a real supplier. Anyone else get burned buying old anvils at auctions?

Watched my buddy buy a railroad anvil that shattered on his first hit.

Did that anvil have the right heat treatment, @fiona330, because mine cracked on the second tap and I was so disappointed.
