Finally got my forge welds to stop cracking by slowing down my hammer
I've been fighting cold shuts on my billet welds for months, and every time I'd bump the heat up and rush it more. Last week an old guy at a hammer-in in Lebanon told me to stop working the steel right out of the fire and let it soak at welding heat for a slow count of 10 first. Did that on three billets in a row and got clean welds with no cracks, first try. The scarf joint on the last one came out so tight I almost didn't see the seam. What's your go-to sign that a weld is actually solid before you start drawing it out?
