Forgot to flux my weld and it cost me a whole Damascus billet

I was working on a pattern weld in my garage shop, got distracted by the phone, and didn't add any borax before the final fold. The scale trapped inside ruined the layers. Anyone have a good trick to remember that step every single time?

That "scale trapped inside" feeling is the absolute worst, and I've done the exact same thing.
