Had a chat with an old timer at the scrap yard that totally changed how I pick steel

Old timers have a knack for making you realize you've been half-assing the basics your whole life. What was the one piece of advice that flipped your perspective the most?

That line about "how to pick steel" got me thinking. It's like that thing where you learn one trick and suddenly you see it everywhere. I started noticing how much I just grab the first thing that looks okay instead of checking the weight or the carbon content. Same with wood at the lumber yard, I'd pick the first 2x4 on the stack without looking for a straight grain or checking for warping. It's a weird life lesson wrapped in something simple.
