Just realized why my anvil ring was driving me crazy for months

I was at a hammer-in last weekend and this old-timer named Dave asked if I ever put magnets on my anvil. I laughed it off until he showed me how putting a couple of strong neodymium magnets on the waist cut down the ring by like 80 percent. Turns out all those YouTube videos I watched about 'anvils that ring too much' never mentioned this simple fix. I spent 3 months thinking I had a bad anvil, but it was just the steel table underneath vibrating. Has anyone else tried wrapping the waist in a chain instead of using magnets?

Tried the chain trick on my anvil a few years back and it worked pretty well, but I ended up switching to magnets since they're easier to take on and off. The chain dampened the ring but left marks on the waist after a while, which bothered me. Magnets are just simpler and don't damage anything long term.

Magnets are a solid upgrade for sure, especially if you're moving the anvil around a lot. I stuck with the chain but doubled up on it, wrapped it tight around the waist and then again near the horn. That really killed the ring without leaving marks, though you gotta be careful not to pinch your fingers when you're setting it up. Some guys I know use a thick rubber mat under the anvil too, which helps a ton with both sound and vibration.
