My 20 year old anvil stand finally gave out last Tuesday

Honestly I knew it was coming. That old stump I had my anvil on was rotting from the inside for years. I was working a pretty heavy piece of 1 inch round bar and the whole thing just tilted sideways on me. Almost lost a toe when the anvil hit the concrete floor. It made this loud thud that scared the crap out of my neighbor's dog. I ended up cutting a new stand out of a big oak log my buddy had sitting in his yard. Took me about 4 hours with a chainsaw and some wedges to get it level. Has anyone else had a stand fail on them mid swing or am I just unlucky?

...and honestly losing a toe would've been a blessing compared to the embarrassment of having my neighbor come over in his robe asking if I was okay. My last stand was an old railroad tie I'd been using for 5 years, thought it was solid as a rock until I hit this one corner of a horseshoe and it just splintered like balsa wood. Anvil hit the ground so hard I think it woke up three counties over. So yeah, you're not unlucky, you're just part of the "my anvil tried to kill me" club now. Welcome.
