Overheard a guy at the scrap yard mention his hammer face

He was talking about how he dresses his hammer face every couple of months with a flap disc, keeping it slightly crowned. I always just let mine go flat and wondered why my strikes felt off. Anyone else pay attention to hammer face geometry, or am I overthinking it?
