Picked a coal forge over propane after 3 demos at a meetup in Ohio

Honestly, I was dead set on getting a propane setup. Thought coal was too messy and old school. But after watching a guy work a 2 inch round bar into a leaf shape in like 4 heats with coal, I changed my mind. The control you get over the hot spots is unreal. Propane felt too even, if that makes sense. Has anyone else gone coal after starting with gas?

Man that's exactly what happened to me. Went to a hammer-in up in Pennsylvania last year. Guy was making axes all day with coal. I was on propane at the time. Asked if I could try his forge for one heat. That was it man. Sold my propane rig the next week. The heat control is just different. You can focus the fire exactly where you need it. Propane heats everything evenly like you said. But sometimes you want the spine cooler and the edge hotter. Coal gives you that. The mess is real though. Have to sweep up every night. And the smoke smell gets in your clothes. But the work comes out better. Stick with it. You'll get faster with practice. The learning curve is worth the time.
