Read a forum post about quenching oil temps, now I'm doubting my whole setup

Someone claimed canola oil needs to be at 130 degrees or you're just wasting steel, and here I've been quenching cold for 12 years after 200 blades with no cracks, so has anyone actually tested this with a thermometer or is that just book talk?
