Talked to a farrier at the Oklahoma State Fair and he set me straight
He was like 75, still shoeing horses part time. Told me I was wasting money on those premade tongs when I could bend my own from rebar in 20 minutes. Watched him do it right there on a borrowed forge. Made me rethink half the tools I've bought from catalogs.

I mean rebar's not ideal for tongs since it can mess with the temper on your good files.

Haven't you found that if you normalize the file right beforehand, the rebar doesn't get it hot enough to matter?
