Talked to an old farrier at the flea market and he told me to stop quenching my tongs in water
He said just letting them air cool keeps the steel from getting brittle over time... never thought about it that way. Anyone else been doing it wrong for years?

Man that "keeps the steel from getting brittle" part really hit home. I used to quench my tongs every time and noticed they started cracking after a few years. Switched to air cooling about six months ago and they've held up way better. Feels weird at first but he's right about avoiding that thermal shock.

Yeah but how bad were the cracks really? Like unless your tongs are snapping in half mid-forge I feel like it's fine to just let them go for a few years and replace em for $20. Not everything needs to be optimized lol.
