Talked with an old timer at the forge who changed how I think about heat treating
Was at a hammer-in last Sunday and this guy named Bill who's been forging since the 70s watched me pull a blade out of the quench. He just shook his head and said "you're rushing the normalization, kid." Spent like 20 minutes explaining how he does three full cycles with slow cool downs instead of two quick ones. Tried it on a 1095 chef knife today and the edge came out way more even. Has anyone else had an old school smith give them a tip that totally flipped their process?

Oh, three normalization cycles on 1095 is actually overkill, not the secret.
