That cheap anvil from Harbor Freight is doing more harm than good
I saw a guy at a demo last month in Des Moines trying to flatten a 1 inch bar on one and the face had a divot after 3 hits. Have you guys noticed more new people showing up with those and blaming their tools when the steel won't move right?

Oh man, I've seen that exact thing. The HF anvil is basically a glorified doorstop for anything over 3/16" thick. Tell them to save up for a proper cast steel anvil or even a big chunk of railroad track, it'll actually bounce the hammer back instead of eating it.

Ha, YES, exactly! I bought one of those HF anvils when I first started out and oh man, what a disaster. @rosep87 is totally right, it just eats all your hammer energy and leaves you swinging twice as hard. I tried forging a 1/4" punch on it and the face started chipping after like ten hits, I couldn't believe it. Those things are just cast iron with a thin hardened top, and the whole body flexes when you hit it. A solid piece of railroad track or even a big forklift tine will outwork that thing every time and save you a ton of frustration. Have you ever tried forging on a chunk of track yourself?
