The day I realized I was quenching too early

Been forging for about 14 years, mostly knives and small tools. Last month I was making a set of three chisels for a client in Tulsa and noticed the edges kept cracking after heat treat. I blamed the steel for two runs, then a buddy watched me work and asked why I was dunking the blade while it was still glowing red at the tip. Turns out I was rushing to quench before the critical temperature evened out, and that thermal shock was killing the grain structure. I slowed down, let the steel soak in the forge for an extra 90 seconds, and the third chisel came out clean with no cracks. Has anyone else found that patience at the quench fixes more problems than changing the steel type?

You ever catch yourself doing that thing where you just know better but still rush it? I did the exact same thing with a batch of hatchets about five years back. Kept losing edges and getting micro cracks on the tips, blamed the 1095, blamed my forge, even blamed the weather once. Then I timed my soak on a hunch and realized I was pulling the steel about 30 seconds too early every single time. Once I forced myself to wait until the color was dead even across the whole blade, not just the thin edge, the problem mostly vanished. Now I treat the soak like a part of the ritual, not a waiting period. That extra minute and a half has saved me more steel than any new alloy ever did.
