Vent: a retired smith in Knoxville watched me quench and asked why I was rushing the steel
I was finishing a set of 6 hooks and dunking them in the oil the second they hit temp, proud of how fast I was moving. He just shook his head and said the metal tells you when it's ready, not the clock, and made me hold each one 3 seconds longer before the quench. Tried it on the next batch and the scale came off way cleaner, no pitting on the faces at all. Curious if anyone else had to get called out on their quench timing before it clicked.
