A book club critique changed how I watch adaptations

I always said the movie was better than the book. Then my book club told me I was just skimming the pages. They pointed out I missed the inner thoughts in The Godfather that make the film's choices hit harder. Now I read the book first, then watch the movie. Anyone else get called out for missing details in a book?

Tbh you just made me feel so much better about getting called out by my own book club. Honestly the Godfather is a perfect example. I read it years ago and thought I had it down, but when my friend asked why I didn't catch how Michael's inner struggle with family loyalty sets up his whole arc in the movie, I had nothing. Ngl it stung because I was the one who always swore the film version was better. Now I read slower, try to catch those little thoughts on the page that make the characters tick later on screen. It's like the book gives you the secret code to what the actors are doing with their faces.

Gotta disagree @emmam67, the movie stands fine on its own without needing the book to explain it.
