Debate: Did the 'Lord of the Rings' movies ruin the books for anyone else?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. When I first read the LOTR books back in high school, I imagined everything a certain way - the Shire was cozier, the battles were messier, and Frodo felt way more broken. Then the movies came out and they were epic, but now when I reread the books, I can't help but picture the movie versions. It's like the films overwrote my imagination, you know? But some of my friends say the movies made the books better for them because they could finally visualize the complex world. Which side are you on - do the adaptations enhance the original story or do they steal something from your personal reading experience? I'm torn after my third reread last month.

Used to be firmly on the imagination side but the third reread changed my mind... those movies let me see the scale of Middle-earth in a way my brain just couldn't pull off on its own.

Had a buddy who never read the books, just watched the movies first... then tried reading Fellowship and got totally lost in all the Tom Bombadil stuff. He kept asking me where the big battles were, and I had to explain that whole chapters are just them walking through a forest singing. Took him forever to adjust to the slower pace.
