Film nerds keep saying The Shining 'fixed' the book and I rewatched both last weekend to settle it
My buddy Dave swears the movie is better because King's ending was too neat. So I sat down Saturday with the book and then the Blu-ray back to back. King gives Jack 5 clear moments where he fights the hotel, and the movie throws almost all of them out. The scrapbook, the wasp nest, the boiler pressure, all gone. Kubrick swapped a dad who tries for a dad who just snaps, which makes the scary parts land harder but guts the whole point about a guy losing a fight. It matters because people keep calling it a better story when it's really a totally different one. Which one actually stuck with you more, the book Jack or the movie Jack?
