Hot take: I was wrong about needing a perfect page-to-screen match

Someone on here told me my reviews were too focused on what got cut, and to judge the film on its own terms... I rewatched 'Annihilation' with that in mind and liked it way more. How do you handle changes that bug you at first?

Oh man, my friend Dave was SO MAD about the 'I Am Legend' ending. He went on a whole rant about how the book's ending was the entire point and the movie just wrecked it. He refused to watch it again for years. Then his kid wanted to see it last Halloween, so he gave in. He told me later that watching it just as a zombie action movie, with Will Smith trying to survive, he actually had a good time. He said getting hung up on that one change was blocking him from seeing a pretty solid film.

Yeah, I get that. I was the same way about the "World War Z" movie, which is funny because I've never even read the book.

My cousin did the SAME thing about "World War Z." He ranted for YEARS about how it barely matched the book, then finally watched it sober one night and admitted it's actually pretty fun if you pretend it's just a random Brad Pitt zombie movie. Sometimes we REALLY overthink this stuff.
