I swore the Percy Jackson movies were trash until my 12 year old cousin made me rewatch them
I used to be one of those people who would not even hear the movies out, like the books were sacred and Hollywood ruined them, end of story. Then over the summer my cousin in Tampa stayed with us for two weeks and she brought the first movie on DVD, and I sat through it just to be nice. What got me was when she paused it and pointed out that the movie is about a kid finding out who he is, not about matching every page, and once I watched it that way it actually worked for me. I still think the books are way better, no question, but I stopped treating the adaptation like it stole something from me. The thing that really flipped it was her line, she goes, did you like the books when you were 12 or when you were 28? and that one hit me hard. So now when something gets adapted I try to watch it twice, once as a fan and once just as a movie, and it saves me a lot of pointless anger. Does anybody else have a book they hated on screen until someone younger reframed it for them?
