My book club almost broke up over the Hobbit movies. We still don't talk about the eagles.

Was it about the changes from the book? I read this article about how the movie had to cut a ton of inner thoughts from the characters, which makes Paul seem way less unsure of himself. I mean, the whole point in the book is him being scared of the future he sees, but the movie just makes him look like a straight up hero. I get why @black.mark's Hobbit thing got heated, it's the same stuff. Changing those little details can wreck the whole feel of the story for people who loved the books. Maybe it's just me but that seems like a totally fair thing to fight about in a book club.

But didn't that inner conflict get completely stripped from Paul's arc in the movie... like, wasn't there a whole scene in the book where he's basically panicking about the jihad and they just cut it? I'm with you on the Hobbit thing too, @black.mark probably remembers that better than I do, but it feels like the same mistake of making the journey too clean.
