My brother in law called the Dune movie boring so I finally read the book and now I owe him an apology
I have been a 'the book is always better' guy for about 20 years, mostly because of Lord of the Rings and because I read a lot on my lunch breaks at work. My brother in law Dave stayed with us for a week in November while his kitchen was getting redone, and one night he said the Dune movies bored him to tears. I gave him the usual speech about how they cut whole chapters and water down the politics. He just shrugged and said the movie gave him the same feeling the book gave me, which was a guy half asleep on a couch. That got under my skin so I grabbed a used copy at a bookstore on 8th for 6 bucks and read the whole thing in nine days. Turns out the parts I remembered as deep were mostly long talks in rooms, and the movie actually made the sand and the worms feel real in a way my brain never did. So now I think the book wins on ideas but the movie wins on vibes, and honestly I might watch it twice before I reread anything. Has anyone else read a book after hating on the movie and flipped sides?
